The protein casein found in ruminant's milk and meat as well as products derived from milk including butter and cheese has been implicated as a cause of clogged arteries.

One should take care when purchasing cheese alternatives that claim to be vegan or vegetarian in that they use casein as a binder to provide texture, and many vegans may be actively avoiding casein due to allergies or health.
